Zoe Lady Maynard proved last week the truism that you are never too old to learn. After taking several ceramic classes she held her first exhibit in a private showing with friends and family.
Art lovers joined Zoe Lady Maynard with family and close friends at the Hillside House Gallery for the Follow Your Dream exhibition. It featured recent ceramic art from Lady Maynard.
The exhibition was the major milestone for Lady Maynard, who took classes with prominent Bahamian ceramicist Jessica Colebrooke.
“In the beginning she was producing work very quickly, and when I say quickly she could get a lot of work out in the space of two weeks. Even though she is getting older her work is still as vibrant,” said Ms Colebrooke.
Some of the work on display included Lady Maynard’s series of fish tiles.
“The fish were representative of her and her family. So there was a large fish that represented her and four other fish which represented her children. She like gardening, so she did flowers. One of the flowers that she said she absolutely loves was sunflower, so she did a series of sunflowers.
“Another thing she loved was pets, so she did a series with dogs, because she would always come and talk about her dogs. Most of what people saw in the show, were things that have meaning to her. They speak to her spirit about what she enjoys, what she likes and what she spends most of her time with. So everything that she did was connected,” said Ms Colebrooke.
Ms Colebrooke said watching Lady Maynard’s drive and passion was inspiring.
“It was rewarding to watch her still create. Most people her age decide in their mind, I am old and that is it, I am going to sit down, but she keeps going.”
Lady Maynard was born Zo Ruth Davis Cumberbatch to Dr Roland Cumberbatch and his wife Meta Davis Cumberbatch. Dr Cumberbatch, a surgeon, was recruited to The Bahamas by the Colonial Service. Meta Davis Cumberbatch, was an internationally respected concert pianist, who used her great gifts to further the arts of the Bahamas and the talents of many of the country’s most noted performers.
On 17 January, 1947, Zo married Clement Travelyan Maynard (later Sir Clement) who served as Deputy Prime Minister. They were married for 63 years, until his death in October of 2009.
