BTC confirms part-time worker cutbacks

THE Bahamas Telecommunications Company yesterday confirmed it has downsized the number of temporary part-time workers at flagship stores.

In a statement yesterday, the company said the staff reduction reflected efforts to redeploy full-time employees at store locations across the country.

The statement read: “Consistent with our plans for expanding and refreshing our retail footprint, BTC has been opening new neighbourhood stores in partnership with Bahamian Entrepreneurs.

“These rationalisation efforts have enabled BTC to redeploy full time employees to BTC’s flagship stores in New Providence and elsewhere in the country.

“Thus, the number of temporary part-time employees required has been reduced.”

The company did not confirm how many part-time workers were fired, or when the dismissals occurred.

The statement added: “The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) is the leading telecoms operator in The Bahamas. BTC is jointly owned by Cable & Wireless Communications (51%) and the Government of The Bahamas (49%). Cable & Wireless Communications has both management and Board control.”
