$39m Port builder helps fire relief

China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has teamed up with the Government to provide relief supplies to more than 100 Abaco residents who were left homeless following a fire.

Staff members were mobilised last Thursday to shop and deliver the necessary items to officials as a part of the national aid effort. CHEC principal, Felix Chang, said that as soon as the company heard about the disaster, it was compelled to assist.

“We automatically felt the need to do something for the people of Abaco who are now without homes,” said Mr Chang. “The fire was an unfortunate situation, and we at CHEC just want to show our support any way that we can. Our staff was very happy to be able to aid the community in this way.”

CHEC was able to donate sleeping bags, fuel, gas cookers, pots, can openers, water, grits and many other food supplies. The items were delivered to officers from the Department of Social Services in the North Abaco district, where supplies are being organised for the victims.

These efforts come as CHEC prepares to start construction shortly on the $39 million North Abaco Port.

This is one weird and seemingly stupid idea. No way a port in Cooper's town is needed or can it be profitable. It's just too damned far off the beaten path. I find it hard to believe the Chinese will sail past the Chinese owned FCP to transship out of Cooper's town. And no way Marsh Harbour is going to use this port, adding an extra $500.00 or so just in trucking from Cooper's to marsh...

The people of Abaco don't even know why this is being done.

Our government is telling us we're in desperate need of more revenue but on the other hand they're doing weird stuff like this. Man as a Bahamian I feel we need to finally stand up to government and make then toe the line. This is getting beyond ridiculous now.

1 million in lime trees. 20 million for a building that can be built 5 million. Now a 39 million dollar port in the bush? And they say WE NEED VAT? They are out of their ever loving minds!!!!
