Third Bahamian contender declares cellular intent

A Bahamian-led company has become the third local player to announce its intentions to bid on the second cellular licence, the tender for which is set to be launched shortly.

Junkanoo Mobile has joined Cable Bahamas and Limitless Bahamas (the former IP Solutions International) in unveiling its intentions, although no firm details on its financing, shareholders and partners were contained in its press statement.

Junkanoo Mobile’s spokesperson, Franklyn Winder, said all members of its unnamed six-strong executive team possess global communications experience and exposure.

He is said to have spent 28 years with a telephone company, holding various positions in senior management.

“Junkanoo Mobile has engaged one of the world’s leading manufacturers in the mobile and telecoms industry to customise, design and build a premium network,” said Mr Winder in his statement.

“This network will be a quantum leap from what is now being experienced by the Bahamian community. Consumers could expect to see fewer drop calls, lower prices and far better technology.”

Junkanoo Mobile said it has access to the necessary funding. Although Mr Winder declined to disclose further details about the company’s assets, he said strategic financial partners were lined up and “eager” to collaborate on the “historic undertaking”.

“Everything hinges on us gaining the license from government,” said Mr Winder.

He added that ‘first level designs’ for a Bahamian cellulat network have been completed.

“We await the Government-issued requirement to fully complete designs,” said Mr Winder. “We will be able to fully roll out the latest version of the LTE (long term evolution) technology within a short period of time, bringing to the Bahamas the latest technology.”
