RENEW Bahamas, the company which manages the New Providence landfill, said it successfully extinguished a “small surface fire,” made up of pallets and tyres on an old part of the dump site on Thursday.
The fire started shortly after 4pm, on the eastern boundary of the site, the company said.
“This area has been inactive for more than five years,” Renew Bahamas said. The company’s fire response team was reportedly immediately mobilised and speedily supported by the Fire Services Branch of the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
“Within minutes, the surface flames were extinguished and there was no residual smoke.
The company will ensure the whole area is drenched,” Renew Bahamas said yesterday.
