Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) can be used as ‘enablers’ to tackle environmental challenges and build sustainable cities, an adviser to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) said yesterday.

“ICTs can be used as enablers to tackle environmental challenges, and especially to build smart, sustainable cities. We do hope that a new process will begin, especially with the Paris Agreement, and that focus will be given to cities sand climate change. ICTs in this respect have a great role to play,” said Christina Bueti at the first day of the  

fifth ITU Green Standards Week (GSW).

The conference is organised by the ITU, and acts as a global platform for discussion and knowledge-sharing on the importance of using ICTs to develop smart, sustainable cities, and ensure a sustainable urban future.

The Bahamas’ participation in the conference is seen as vital as this nation rebounds and rebuilds from Hurricane Joaquin.    

“This forum brings together the climate change experts, ICT experts, regulators and policy makers. It’s objective is to discuss issues related to climate change, adaptation and mitigation. We will also be discussing how to tackle waste challenges. We will hold also a training on green ICT standards to emphasise the role and importance of international standards. We will also report on the progress of the ITU’s Connect 20/20 agenda,” said Ms Bueti.
