Frank Hanna, who rose from humble beginnings to become one of his generation's leading local entrepreneurs, died on Thursday at the age of 79 after battling lung cancer.
An Andros native, he created, and for 48 years ran, the Frank Hanna Contract Cleaning Company, one of the leading cleaning companies in the country.
Mr Hanna's daughters now control and run his businesses.
He was also known for his unique style of clothing – frequently wearing brightly coloured clothes.
Progressive Liberal Party Chairman Bradley Roberts told The Tribune Mr Hanna was "a very generous man", noting that he loved regattas and sports.
Also speaking with The Tribune, former Deputy Prime Minister Cynthia "Mother" Pratt hailed Mr Hanna as one who looked out for those less fortunate and gave them jobs.
"He is a class of his own," she said. "He stands out."
"I see him as a pioneer in this country, one who has taken those who did not have the academic qualifications who needed a job, he took them and he trained them in his company, he gave them a start in life. Many of these were mothers, single mothers who needed a hand up. They were able to feed their children, to educate their children through his efforts.
“When we look at Frank Hanna, he was one of those who gave, he didn't take away. He helped the poor and continued to reach out. That will be remembered in my mind because he was a man who tried to make life better for somebody else."
