BYRON Ferguson and his Foinikas Syrou volleyball team fought to stay alive in the Greece Volleyball League best-of-seven championship.
On Monday night, Ferguson and Syrou pulled off a 3-1 win over Poak, a team consisting of USA national team player David Lee and at least two Cuban national team players, to cut the series deficit to 2-1. Ferguson said they set the tone from the first set when they secured a marathon 35-33 decision.
“We attacked better and passed the ball better on serve receive that was the difference in the match,” Ferguson said.
In the game, Ferguson had five kills and four blocks in what he termed a very good game. Now he’s hoping that he can carry that momentum over to game four on Thursday night.
“If we do the same thing we did last game we should be able to win but this time it will be a little more difficult because we will play on their home court,” he said.
Ferguson, the only Bahamian playing professional volleyball, said they are in a dogfight, but they’re trying their best to stay in the series.
“For us to win as a team we have to serve receive better,” he said. “They are serving really well but if we can control that we have a chance to win.”
Once the championship is done, Ferguson said he will be returning home to get ready to compete with the men’s national team when the Bahamas Volleyball Federation selects the team to represent the Bahamas this summer.
“I’m looking forward to coming home and competing for the national team again,” he added.
