11.30pm: That brings an end to our live coverage of what has been a dramatic FNM convention - thanks for joining us. We'll keep you up to date with all the weekend news on tribune242.com and The Tribune will return to newsstands on Tuesday. Have a great weekend.

11.26pm: Dr Minnis has left the stage as the FNM's three day convention draws to a close. Supporters are continuing to dance in the convention hall.

11.25pm: Dr Minnis says “we will succeed . . . because we are Bahamians and that's what we do.”

“Change is coming,” he says, as he encourages supporters to register.

“Since Christie does not want to retire, we will retire him,” Dr Minnis says as he finishes his speech.

11.20pm: Promising a “meritocracy”, Dr Minnis says individuals will be promoted due to what they know not who they know.

He says his dream is to see all Bahamians attend the University of the Bahamas free of charge.

He asks all those in the convention hall to stand and give each other the sign of peace - to show all those watching “they are unified”.

11.10pm: He is now talking about a tough new anti-corruption system. He says “If I do wrong as Prime Minister, they will have the power to arrest me”.

11.00pm: Dr Minnis pledges to bring a Freedom of Information Act. He also says he will change the living conditions of inner city residents.

The FNM leader's speech is considerably more solemn this evening.

10.55pm: The FNM leader says he intends to honour former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham's call for unity. He said they have a lot of “mess” to clean up.

10.50pm: Dr Minnis tells those in attendance it will take a full team effort to clinch victory in the 2017 election.

Speaking about his leadership challenger, Loretta Butler-Turner, he says: “We have undergone a lot over the last few years with internal politics laid bare. It has not been pretty but they have maintained their integrity.”

He says they offer the olive branch to Loretta – who he is certain will be the Long Island candidate with his full support - and Dr Sands.

Dr Minnis says significant offers were made to both Loretta and Dr Sands and he remains hopeful they will accept.

10.35pm: FNM leader Dr Hubert Minnis is given a standing ovation as he takes to the stage. He says he didn't dance tonight after his wife told him that, until he learns to dance, he should sit down.

Dr Minnis also recognises Dr Duane Sands who is present at the convention in the absence of Loretta Butler-Tuner.

10.25pm: KB is now entertaining the crowd.

10.20pm: Senator Carl Bethel is now at the podium. He says the party has a challenge to get rid of the “worthless” PLP.

The government has a “history of scandal”, Mr Bethel says.

He says there will be a full scale commission of inquiry into Baha Mar when the FNM takes office.

Mr Bethel is now paying tribute to FNM leader Dr Hubert Minnis and finishes his speech by saying “a party united can never be defeated”.

9.55pm: Bamboo Town MP Renward Wells is on stage. He says the Free National Movement has a vision to rip apart the chains of corruption. This new vision will create an environment of accountability and transparency.

9.45pm: FNM Leader Dr Hubert Minnis is now making a grand entrance into the hall. Those gathered in the room have all stood to their feet, some standing on chairs, celebrating his confirmed position as party leader. The crowd are chanting “Roc with Doc”.

9.40pm: Kay Forbes Smith, former Atlanta Consul General, is now addressing the FNM Convention. This destructiveness in the party must never rear its ugly head in the party again, she says.

9.20pm: Southern Shores candidate Frankie Campbell is now at the podium.

9.10pm: Prophetess Jasmine Turner from Grand Bahama tells the convention there is a lack of economic activity with key investments promised by the PLP have not materialised. She alleged that Grand Bahamians are being turned away from the Rand Memorial Hospital because there is a lack of beds and medication.

9.00pm: Mr Foulkes asks the audience to turn to each other and say “I respect you” and “I forgive you, because you matter.”

8.50pm: Mr Foulkes says with Dr Minnis and Mr Turnquest at the helm, the party have the best team for the next election.

8.40pm: Astra Rolle Armbrister appeared to capture the audience's attention with her very personal speech. Secretary General and Golden Gates candidate Michael Foulkes is now on stage. He asks the crowd to cheer for Loretta Butler-Turner and Dr Duane Sands and says “we are one FNM”.

8.35pm: Dr Duane Sands, who was originally scheduled to speak tonight, will no longer do so. Torchbearer Astra Rolle Armbrister is now on the stage.

8.30pm: The results of today's convention voting are being announced by Sterling Quant. Cheers for the announcement of Dr Hubert Minnis, Peter Turnquest and Sidney Collie as party leader, deputy and chairman respectively.

There are still some empty seats at the venue.

8.15pm: Session chair Gadville McDonald, the party's Rum Cay and San Salvador candidate has called the session to order. He said tonight signals a new era for the party – one of unity to defeat the “morally corrupt PLP government”.

Those gathered in the convention centre have joined hands and are singing "Bind us together" in an act of unity.

8.00pm: This video shows the warm-up session for the third night of the convention as the hall begins to fill up.

6.15pm: After withdrawing from the leadership race, Loretta Butler-Tuner says she has no plans to leave the FNM. She said she dropped out because of irregularities in the process and deep structural issues. The final straw, she said, was Peter Turnquest's rebuke of her.

5.30pm: This statement was released by the office of Richard Lightbourn this afternoon, with regards to his comments last night that drew fierce criticism.

“I would like to sincerely apologize to the Bahamian public and women in particular for my comments made last night at the Free National Movement convention.

“It was never my intention to offend anyone but to speak to the need for effective parenting and the support for a strong family structure which will go a long way toward solving many of our country’s social ills.

“It is a woman’s right to decide what to do with her body.

“I received immediate and justified criticism for my comments. It was an extremely poor decision on my part.

“My comments in no way shape or form reflect the position of the FNM.”

1.35pm: Speaking this afternoon, Dr Duane Sands said: “The report is true, we will speak on what happened later, we communicated that we dropped out of the race last night.”

Both Dr Sands and Loretta Butler-Turner have left the convention.

1.30pm: Loretta Butler-Turner and Duane Sands have confirmed they have dropped out of the leadership race, but they have refused to comment on the meeting they had with Dr Minnis.

1pm: Voting for positions at the FNM Convention has been extended to 2pm.

12.15pm: Loretta Butler-Turner is in talks with Dr Hubert Minnis, a well placed FNM source has told The Tribune. They are "coming up with the best solution for the Bahamian people".

11.10am: As rumours swirl around the convention, Dr Duane Sands is meeting now with Dr Hubert Minnis.

10.30am: Loretta Butler-Turner arrived at the Convention on Friday amid unconfirmed reports that she and Dr Duane Sands had pulled out of the leadership contest following last night’s chaotic scenes.

As she emerged from her car she was overheard telling her supporters that she “will not let the other camp win” and that “criminals will not hijack the election”.

Mrs Butler-Turner, who is contesting the leadership position with Dr Hubert Minnis with voting this morning and the result to be announced tonight, also said “the Bahamas is bigger than all these people. Y’all saw what they did. Minnis and Turnquest designed this to destroy me giving a speech last night."

Peter Turnquest faces Dr Sands in the contest for the deputy leadership.

Mrs Butler-turner is expected to hold a press conference later this morning.

FNM Chairman Sidney Collie said he was not authorised to make any statements and refused to take questions at the morning press conference.

10am: Three female government ministers have reacted with fury after Richard Lightbourn proposed at the Free National Movement Convention on Thursday night that unwed mothers with more than two children should have their "tubes tied" in an effort to curtail the country’s social ills, describing it as a “shocking and despicable” violation of women's reproductive rights. If Minnis is unable to lead a unified political party by commanding the respect of the vast majority of its current members and past supporters, there's no way in hell he'll be able to lead our country. Minnis wreaks of corruption and incompetence and is an utter embarrassment for many Bahamians who were for many years die hard supporters and financial backers of the FNM, but have since abandoned the party because of Minnis. If it were not for Minnis, Perry Christie and the PLP would be decimated in the next general election. But sadly, Minnis alone will be singularly responsible for handing the corrupt Christie-led PLP government another five year term. Minnis has from day one of his assuming the leadership of the opposition and the FNM party itself been all about putting himself and his own interests above the interests of the country. His inflated ego and insatiable hunger for power has him totally oblivious to his serious limitations as a politician and leader; he simply cannot understand and fathom that he is so disliked by so many many Bahamians no matter what their party affiliation may have been historically.

My tenure as a life-long FNM will come to an end tonight if Minnis emerges as leader of the party. I might as well vote PLP, as that will be the result of the 2017 general election if Minnis is leader.

A sad and bleak future for the Bahamas indeed. Yet it is the sobering reality we will face if the delegates cannot put aside their own self-interests and see what is best for the country and the party as a whole.

Only the delegates (stacked in his favour) want Minnis. Idiots don't realize that his leadership won't guarantee a win at the polls. So many people in the VOTING public are turned off because he's at the helm and lots of FNM's will switch after this.

All I'll say is good luck. He may win the battle but not the war. In my most sarcastic voice, "PLP all the way!"

If you're a registered voter or intend to register to vote in the next general election, I respectfully suggest you do like most us will be doing......vote for the independent candidate who will be running in your constituency if you know him or her to be reputable, honest and literate....or not bother to vote at all. That's the sad and harsh reality of the situation those of us fearful of another PLP five year term find ourselves in. Minnis should be left alone to attend to the official bereavement service and burial of the FNM party for all time to come. You need to wrap your head around the fact that the FNM party no longer exists....and that is rightfully the legacy of one Hubert Alexander Ingraham, more affectionately known as "Hubiggity'. For decades we, the Bahamian people, have been played as fools by Ingraham and Christie alike....taking our country to the very brink of financial ruination!

After being a life-long FNM, the party is now dead to me. I will NEVER vote for Minnis and his corrupt, arrogant, inept platform. I have no idea who will run as an independent in the Killarney district, but I will be voting for them in 2017.

Thank you, delegates -- you and Minnis deserve each other. I hope you all get whatever you sold your souls for. May you all rot in hell for what you have done to our Bahamas and the Bahamian people.May you all live long enough to see the damage you've done!

Hopefully this means they will now work together as a uniformed team. Minnis doesn't need to fear Loretta. Put her in the foreground as she presents well. I think if they set themselves up in a way to be transparent and operate with integrity, they will gain the trust of the people. At the end of the day what is the alternative? We need these people on one accord working to upright this sinking ship of an economy, the albatross of a possible financial devaluation, increase in crime, underperforming educational system. We have to pray that we vote for the best person in our constituency. We must then hold their feet to the fire. We must demand transparency from our leaders. We must picket, strike, sign petitions and lobby to change legislature and recall ineffective politicians. We are knocking Minnis and even Loretta like there is some better alternative. I was never FNM or PLP but for who would probably do as they proclaimed. The PLP have shown they are not interested in the people but only for what they can get for themselves, family and friends. I am tired off being lied to. Blatantly lied to. Well that's my 5 cents.

Nice sentiment, but Loretta is extremely angry, she may have a reason to be, but as an effective leader she would have to be able to roll with the punches and she hasn't, she's lashed out. I don't see her changing. I don't know if Minnis is up to it, he may be, but I haven't seen it. Nygard is rich too.

The FNM's fate is all but sealed. This is the time when Independents and outsiders will probably get in. From people calling for a Theocracy to people calling for there to be a constitutional amendment to put the bible into constitution. All the roaches will crawl out of the holes. The time for establishment politics is over, I just hope Bahamians think with logic and sound reasoning when we elect the next bunch into office. If not This country WILL FAIL and the economy will self destruct and implode. This country is literally on the cusp of ruin.

There is really no time for ignorant PLP comments today. Unfortunately Minnis is such a failure he has brought down the only party that can change this country for the better. As I posted several days ago. The elections will be won or lost by the results of the convention. Seems to me we now have not changes anything during the convention which technically puts us on the same path we were originally on. The good doctor is back in the boss chair again, let's see if all the dancing will solve anything now. Do things the same way, get the same results. Soooo am going green!

We cannot give the PLP another term. Whatever you do you have to vote for a viable alternative...the FNM ain it so we need to start looking at the options that are available and pick the best one or the PLP will finish destroying us.

Loretta was trying to teach the FNM's dem how to be assertive and have self esteem. So Loretta tell them, "Those of you who think you are stupid stand up." So Dr. Dwayne Sands stood up. Loretta wasn't expecting anyone to stand up so she ask Dr. Sands, "Why did he stand?" Dr. Sands replied, "Because i didn't want to leave you standing by yourself."

Comrades! this is the time for Duane to step forward before reporters to fully explain himself and to stand tall to answer and not dodge tough questions from reporters.
Questions like:
When did you first tell Loretta that you were no longer comfortable to continue on running by her side as her deputy running mate?
Did you only tell Loretta right after she delivered her speech last night before the convention delegates, that she was on her own because you were going to inform Minnis, that you Dr. Duane, had abandoned Loretta's ship for the leadership?
Dr. Duane you are a good and decent Bahamalander but you for whatever reasons either allowed Loretta to use you, or you used Loretta, for political advantage. Regardless, there's no moving on role to be played by you within the red party - if you don't talk what you know?

This an amazing turn of events. Loretta's actions have effectively torpedoed Dr Sands, so much so he didn't even get to speak. I still can't comprehend why he thought it was a good idea to align with her. Even if he'd lost his bid on his own, it would have been better than this

he knew that there was a coup afoot and they would try to get him out with any means, including going to the Swindling lady to have him removed

he knew that there was a whisper campaign against him

he knew that he wasn't the type to cut hip

he knew his grasp on his lead was tenuous

but he was the leader

and he knew that he had a chance to lead the country

and he knew the party machinery

and he knew that he would have to get into the trenches and dig,

he didn't give up and put cold hard cash compresses on where it hurt because he could -- he is a millionaire.

Nope. He dug in. He was the last man standing. He gracefully engineered a victory in the jaws of defeat, and he did it without thundering cannons, or hacks writing letters to the newspaper or appearing on talk shows on his behalf.

Nope. He just did it.

And they say that he doesn't have what it takes? He isn't a leader? He survived the sinister machinations of a palace revolt and came out on top without any scars or any metaphorical blood being shed.

The malcontents should go away. The unenlightened should leave the party. In the crucible of hatred and everything shameful and base, he survived the slings and arrows of the unwashed, the unclean, and the baser human beings in the party. And he is not a leader???????

He is made of sterner stuff than the effete incumbent and the merry band of bottom-feeders currently in power, and he is a policy wonk.

For once there is a very small light at the end of the tunnel, and it is not an oncoming train.

'banker' you are so fearful of and paranoid about the corrupt Christie-led PLP government getting another five year term that you are unable to recognize Minnis for who he truly is - Lucifer in the flesh! Christie has only the pointed ears and forked tongue, but Minnis is steeped in deeply rooted evil and breathes destructive fire over everything and everyone good. uhhhh ... I have spoken to Minnis on a prolonged and personal basis, and I would have to disagree with your assessment.

I een afraid of anything any more. If Crisco Butt gets in for another 5 years, so be it. It will ruin the Bahamas for a long time, but I am now convinced that we are already beyond repair.

There are systemic problems that can't be easily fixed. We have at least two, possibly three lost generations that form a sizable portion of the population. No work, no skills, no enlightenment, no path out. It doesn't look good.

Minnis een a perfect choice either because he is incapable of thinking outside the box. But he is the least of two evils, and he might even do some good.

There is often a law of unintended consequences. Bill Clinton benefited deeply from it. It is a confluence of being there, chaotic events, luck and a minor deed that snowballs into a nice black swan and if there is a chance that it will happen, Minnis is the guy that it will happen to. I ain't holding my breath, but there is a possibility. With Crisco Butt, there is no hope.

I don't know who or what poisoned your mind, but I would urge you to actually go on a quest to learn more about the man Minnis, and not the politician persona that has been floating around. Or not. I have learned that once a human being thin-slices an opinion, it may never change. We make up our minds from emotion and never apply cognitive tools to rationalise them. Look at Tal & Birdie. In their heart of hearts they know better about the PLP, and maybe there is a secret place where they may bear some shame knowing that the PLP is totally bereft of human decency, yet even the worms that consume their mouldering bodies in the grave will vomit when they ingest the PLP bits residing at the cellular level of their rotting carcasses ... which ironically will then most accurately represent all of the PLP members of parliament from the dawn of independence. So mote it be.

You would be most surprised to learn how long I've known Minnis and just how well I know him. I sincerely hope an independent decides to run in your constituency; someone other than Minnis or Christie whom you would feel comfortable voting for.

In the Westminster system, an independent has no power at all.

Which is precisely why the newly elected independents would quickly appreciate their common interest in establishing a new political party...but this will all be for naught if the independents do not constitute a majority or are not reputable intelligent individuals wishing to serve their country as statesmen unlike the buffoons who currently sit on both sides of our HOA. It would be too late for such independents to establish a new party before the general election. The FNM party is no more and those who believe it is still a viable party are simply kidding themselves. The big question is how many 'quality' candidates will throw their hat into the ring to run as independents....we already know a great number of buffoons will try to run as independents given the current political climate...better to not vote at all if no 'quality' candidate runs as in dependent in your constituency. We need to keep the corrupt buffoons out of the HOA and avoid simply replacing them with a new bunch or, worse still, a bunch lead by Minnis!

The FNM will NOT be getting my vote this time around, maybe next time. I am an FNM who will not support a M[nnis led FNM!
