VEHICULAR traffic at the Paradise Island tunnel had to be diverted yesterday after a service truck struck a "sacrificial beam" causing it to fall and resulting in the driver being taken to hospital.
Atlantis, in a press statement yesterday, said the truck, owned by a service provider, entered the tunnel with its lift in the up position, hitting the beam, which is designed to "stop vehicles that exceed the height limit".
The statement further clarified that the beam is designed to prevent structural damage to the tunnel in cases similar to what occurred Monday.
Short delays were reported due to the incident and subsequent traffic diversions.
According to the resort, the driver, though not appearing to be seriously injured, was shaken up and taken to the hospital.
The resort's statement added that normal traffic flow was resumed shortly after the debris was properly cleared.

Good that no one was seriously hurt and that it didn't just "break" out if the blue like the headline implies.

an example of how lacking a safety culture is in the Bahamas workplace. one would assume that prior to operating the truck, safety procedures would require the operator to ensure the lift is not in the up position.. avoidable expense...
