A Bahamian man and 31 illegal immigrants who were picked up in waters off Bimini were charged in the Freeport Magistrate’s Court with breach of the Immigration Act.
Andre Symonette, 45, of New Providence, was charged with illegal embarkation in Court Two before Magistrate Charlton Smith. He pleaded guilty and was cautioned and discharged.
According to the particulars, Symonette was among the group of migrants who were interdicted by the US Coast Guard at sea some eight miles off Bimini on Sunday. Jamaican Shawayne Andrew Campbell, 25, of Kingston, Jamaica, was charged with overstaying and illegal embarkation. He pleaded guilty and was fined $500 or two months in prison on the charge of overstaying. On the charge of illegal embarkation, he was cautioned and discharged.
The Haitian migrants were charged with illegal landing and illegal embarkation. They were cautioned and discharged.
