40 Haitians detained in Andros

MORE than 40 Haitian migrants were detained in Andros on Monday after their vessel ran aground in Mars Bay.

According to the Immigration Department the group consists of 44 Haitian men and seven Haitian women who were arrested and detained by officers of the Royal Bahamas Police Force and Bahamas Immigration Department.

Immigration officials have been sent to Andros to investigate and further process the migrants who are presently being held at the Government Complex in The Bluff.

All migrants have received medical attention from local Ministry of Health personnel, and are reported well, the Department of Immigration said.

This comes after 45 Haitian migrants had been arrested earlier by law enforcement officers in Long Island on Saturday.

The group of 36 Haitian men and nine women were arrested and detained after their vessel came ashore at Clarence Town, Long Island.

They were expected to appear before a judge in Long Island yesterday.
