THE first day of July marks the beginning of a new Rotary year - and this year it also marks the addition of a new focus for Rotarians.

The Rotary Club is to add “supporting of the environment” to its other six areas of focus for community projects.

A statement from Rotary clubs said: “The significance of this move by Rotary International is that it acknowledges that people and the planet are inextricably linked.

“The issues facing every living thing on the planet like climate change, biodiversity, sustainable fisheries, conservation and resource management are uppermost in the minds of many Rotarians who can now access global grant funding to tackle these initiatives head on.”

In recognition of this new emphasis, the Rotary Club of East Nassau (RCEN) has declared July as Environment Month and are planning a number of events which include having Rotary Foundation trustee Brenda M Cressey speak on why Rotary supports the environment at their lunchtime meeting on July 9.

Ms Cressey was instrumental in having Rotary International formalise protecting the environment as another area of focus.

RCEN was the first club in The Bahamas to have a committee with an environmental focus and this July they will be hosting local speakers and hands-on activities. As a service organisation still giving aid to victims of Hurricane Dorian, Rotarians are very aware of the impact of climate change on Bahamians.

The club continues to support the Bahamas National Trust’s fruit forest in Fox Hill near Sandilands Primary School, through a tree planting campaign that it hopes to broaden to other communities. Anyone interested in working with RCEN on a tree planting campaign can reach them through their Facebook page.
