FTX Digital Markets yesterday donated $75,000 to the Bahamas Humane Society.
BHS president Kim Aranha said the sizeable donation would be used to keep the animal shelter on Dunmore Avenue “afloat”.
“They made a donation of $75,000 and obviously we are tremendously grateful and very excited and we hope that this is the beginning of a very long and fruitful relationship,” she told The Tribune.
Asked what the money would be used for, she expressed regret that their current circumstances did not allow officials there to put the money into a fund for use to build a new facility.
Currently, the BHS is at full capacity.
“Well, I wish we could put it away for building a new shelter, but I’m afraid we’re going to have to use it to just buy food and medication for the animals that are in residence now because we just have so many animals still,” the BHS president said.
“I mean nothing would make me happier than to have more people adopt and be able to get the shelter down to a more manageable number but it’s just a never-ending stream.
“Right now, its mothers with puppies and this could all be avoided if people would spay and neuter their dogs, but there is some sort of cultural block on doing that and it’s such a pity because the only suffering is the animals.
“So, I wish I could tell you that it would go into a fund, but we’re going to need it to just stay afloat.”

Talking about dogs, I remember back in the 70's, my walking the yard at the Human Society in Chippindale and being taken back by the site of so many dogs and cats that had been euthanized and and piled into drums, drums and more drums that were overflowing with bodies, spilling out onto the ground,― Yes?
