Grand Bahama attorney David Thompson believes that after 49 years of independence the Bahamas has “the third most envious economy” in the Western Hemisphere, after America and Canada.

He also noted that the country has received world recognition and respect because of the outstanding accomplishments of Bahamians in sports and academics.

“We are the third most envious economy on our side of the world, Mr Thompson said. Bahamas is a bless country, our country excels in sports and academics.”

Mr Thompson, a former Grand Bahama MP, said that in the Bahamas it is possible for “any barefoot boy or girl” to become anything they want to be.

“That is exemplified by men such as Lynden Pindling, the first Prime Minister of the Bahamas who was a great leader and thinker; Mr Hubert Ingraham, a person who believes in modernisation and stability of the country, Mr Perry Christie who has moved us along, Dr Hubert Minnis who took us through Dorian and Covid-19 and now Mr Philip ‘Brave’ Davis,” he said.

According to Mr Thompson, The Bahamas has come a long way over the past 49 years.

“We had an influx of tourists from all around the world and we have seen our government evolved to where we went from a colony to women voting in 1960 and to Constitutional changes in 1962, and to where the whole country was on the move for Majority Rule in 1967. He also recalled how Randol Fawkes’ joining the PLP helped formed the majority government.

Mr Thompson said that independence in 1973 was a significant moment in the country’s history. “I think we have come a long way as a people and regarding our Constitution from 1972 to now. We have been the most law-abiding country, even though we still have crime running rampant around several islands, the Bahamas is a Christian nation and that we will strive to do our best for our fellowman and make life better for all Bahamians,” he said.

He wished all Bahamians a happy and safe independence.

On Saturday, July 9, the Independence Cultural Extravaganza will take place at Independence Park at 6.30pm. There will be live performance, junkanoo rush out, and fireworks

On Monday, July 11, Coconut Fest 2022 will take place at 11am – 9pm at Pelican Point, East Grand Bahama.

Ridiculous statement

We are one week away from no imports of food or fuel to be as good as dead ...... And this has-been politician, like 90% of the others wants to pretend as if we have it all together????

Maybe if you are in the political inner circle, you can say that. But the average Bahamian is catching hell.
