Teen admits attack with wheelbarrow handle

By PAVEL BAILEY

A RAGGED island teenager pleaded guilty yesterday in a Magistrate’s Court to attacking a man with a wheelbarrow handle after the man allegedly robbed him.

Craig Maycock Jr, 18, represented by Rsyzard Humes, appeared before Senior Magistrate Samuel McKinney on a charge of grievous harm.

At 11 am on April 10 in Duncan Town, Ragged Island, it is alleged that Maycock attacked Theodore Lockhart after he ambushed Maycock who was on his bike. During this incident the accused reportedly beat Lockhart about the body with the metal wheelbarrow handle leaving him with a broken forearm and teeth.

In court Maycock pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge.

He said he only attacked the complainant after Lockhart allegedly broke into his home the night before and stole $100.

During his plea of mitigation Humes called his client’s actions regrettable, but pointed out that Maycock suffered from mental issues for which he had previously been diagnosed at Sandilands. In addition to offering to show the diagnosis to the Magistrate, Humes also said that the accused had no prior convictions and came from a supportive family willing to render assistance.

The accused’s attorney then asked the court to take into consideration Maycock’s youth and early plea of guilt so that they could be lenient in their ruling.

In view of this, Magistrate McKinney deferred Maycock’s sentencing to May 25 to review the accused’s mental health report and check on the condition of Lockhart as he is still undergoing treatment in hospital from the attack.

Until his court date Maycock will be returned to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.
