SPORTING MISCHIEF & MAYHEM: Perseverance and persistence pays off

THIS week’s column is dedicated to 13 tough-as-nails baseball players in the coach pitch division of JBLN (the Junior Baseball League of Nassau) - the Bahamas Wi Max Cubs. The 0-9 Cubs ... pardon me, now the 1-9 Cubs!

Story

Bet Vegas plays fair

I have always supported and still do the so-called gambling, wagering or numbers industry. In fact, the first media personality to advocate for the legalisation and regulation of the same. During the assorted opinion polls, I stood tall and proud to support the “yes” vote. A number, pardon the pun, of individuals and corporate entities supported the same, inclusive of myself and several prominent clerics, et al.

STARS of the ‘Bahamas Behold’ advertising campaign kept the beauty of the country in the forefront for hours recently, with a series of interviews with radio and television stations across the Americas.

Story

The bridge

The 2021 general elections were pivotal to the recovery of the nation from the ravages of the devastating hurricane Dorian and her brother Andrew coupled with the arrival of the cousin COVID-19. They all came here uninvited and, clearly, we had not prepared rooms for them.

Story

Climb down from those high horses

I often joke that I am the smartest individual in the Universe. As time goes on in our wonderful nation, I am beginning to really believe that. Let us examine the proposed debt reduction at Bahamas Power & Light. It is commonly agreed and accepted that Bahamas Power & Light and its corporate predecessor, Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC) has been badly run and managed for decades under successive administrations.

Story

Crime is not out of control

HERE in our wonderful nation a lot of people are up in arms, pardon the pun, over crime and the fear of crime. Basically, despite the perception, crime is NOT out of control. Yes, there are challenges but nothing insurmountable, in my considered view.

A landslide win for PLP

The Bahamian people have spoken and have elected the PLP, led by the incoming Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip 'Brave' Davis, QC (PLP Cat Island), by a landslide. This is no time for gloating. The heavy lifting is now about to begin. Brave will be well advised to hit the ground running on behalf of a trusting populace. In the weeks and months ahead he and his administration will have two immediate tasks: get the pandemic under control as much as humanly possible and to build back our economy better than before.

Story

Some PLP’s hearing voices?

It has been written that: ‘Whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad.’ This bold and provocative quote has caused many persons to act out of the box, across the board. There are others who remind me of the fabled Don Quixote, the deluded hero and protagonist of a novel by a Spanish author hundreds of years ago. He was accompanied by his faithful valet called Sanchez.

FREE National Movement Deputy leader Loretta Butler-Turner yesterday urged the Christie administration to table the Financial Action Task Force’s recommendations that were given to Attorney General Allyson Maynard Gibson nearly two months ago in Paris.

Story

Leaders can be worst offenders

With reference to the story “VAT Messenger is a Tax Dodger” which appeared in the Thursday, 20 February 2014 edition of the Nassau Guardian, I found former PLP Senator and Prime Minister Christie appointed VAT Consultant Ishmael Lightbourne’s self-admission of Real Property Tax evasion extraordinary to say the least.

Bail issue... who is really at fault?

A media feeding frenzy was sparked recently by remarks attributed to the Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves at a CARICOM Summit in Trinidad & Tobago relative to bail being granted in homicide cases by Bahamian judges.

Story

EDITORIAL: Is there really light at the end of the tunnel?

AT long last, the so-called temporary measure of renting generators to supplement the power output at Bahamas Power and Light may be coming to an end.

FRONT PORCH: From sea to shining sea the US has lost its lustre

America is sick. Some of its worse ills long ago metastasized and are so pervasive that they will only respond to dramatic change. White supremacy is an unyielding and entrenched power and bastion. Long-term demographic change will help to seriously address some of the worst features of white privilege.
