Two arrested at hospital after six shot in capital

SIX people were shot in three separate incidents across New Providence over two days, including a 27-year-old man who underwent surgery after being shot in the chest.

The shootings occurred in Bain Town, Gambier Village and the Augusta Street area on Thursday and Friday.

Two men were taken into custody after the Augusta Street shooting after the wounded 27-year-old identified them to police as the people responsible.

Shortly after 11am on Friday, officers from the Tourism Patrol Unit were on routine patrol along Polhemus Street when they received reports of gunshots in the Meadow Street area.

As officers turned onto Augusta Street, a silver Nissan Cube with its rear windshield shattered sped across their path towards Meadow Street.

The 25-year-old driver told officers he had been shot in the right hand in the Augusta Street area. A 29-year-old man was travelling with him.

Police detained both men and transported them to hospital for treatment.

While escorting the 25-year-old driver to the trauma room, officers encountered a 27-year-old man who had also arrived at hospital from the Augusta Street area with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The 27-year-old identified both men as the people who had shot him earlier, according to police.

The 25-year-old was treated and discharged before being taken into custody along with the 29-year-old.

Police said both men were informed that they were being investigated in connection with the attempted murder of the 27-year-old.

The wounded man underwent surgery and was listed in serious condition.

Earlier on Friday, three men were shot after two masked gunmen opened fire on a group sitting on a porch in Gambier Village.

Officers from the Western Division responded to Curtis Road shortly after 9am after receiving reports of gunfire.

A 27-year-old man told officers he was sitting on a porch with friends when a dark-coloured Nissan pulled up.

Two masked men wearing black hooded sweatshirts got out of the vehicle and opened fire in their direction.

The 27-year-old was shot in the left leg, right arm and back.

A second 27-year-old man, who was also sitting on the porch, suffered graze wounds to his back, left shoulder and right leg.

A 33-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg.

All three were taken to hospital and listed in stable condition.

Police said the gunmen fled the scene in a black Nissan.

The violence began on Thursday morning when a 19-year-old woman was shot while sitting on the porch of her Bain Town home plaiting her boyfriend’s hair.

Police said that shortly before 8.48am, the woman was at her West Street residence when an unknown man dressed in a black jacket and wearing a mask jumped over the property’s fence.

The man fired a single shot in her direction, striking her in the leg.

Emergency Medical Services took her to hospital for treatment.

Police said her condition was unknown.

Investigations into the three shootings are continuing.
