THE Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) received approximately $50,000 worth of musical instruments from the Chinese government on Friday, a donation officials said would help nurture musical talent and inspire future generations.
Chinese Ambassador to The Bahamas Yan Jiarong attended the handover ceremony at the RBPF’s internal security division, where 92 musical instruments were donated and divided equally between the two forces.
Ms Jiarong highlighted music’s role in fostering cultural exchange between The Bahamas and China and said this latest donation was just another tangible result of their partnership.
She recalled the various occasions on which both bands performed at Chinese Embassy events, impressing guests and staff alike.
“So, by supporting the two bands today, we hope to add one more small note to that exchange,” Ambassador Jiarong said. “May the music of the two bands continue to bring joy to the Bahamian people and play a beautiful melody of friendship between China and The Bahamas.”
Deputy Police Commissioner Kirkwood Andrews expressed gratitude for the “meaningful” donation, saying the instruments would help create new opportunities for aspiring musicians.
“An instrument in the hands of a committed musician, comes a voice through which talent, discipline, creativity, and national pride are expressed,” DCP Andrews said. “I am particularly encouraged by what the gift represents for the future, as we continue to expose young people to music and positive avenues for professional development.”
Attorney General Wayne Munroe, who’s also acting National Security Minister, called the presentation an investment in institutional excellence, cultural preservation, and the continued development of law enforcement officers.
He said the government looked forward to continued cooperation based on mutual respect and shared opportunities for progress.
“We must continue to create environments in which our young people can discover their abilities, develop confidence, embrace discipline, and recognise that their talents can become instruments of positive change,” Mr Munroe said.
