Bermuda learns from Arawak Port project

ARAWAK Port Development Company (APD) executives recently hosted Bermuda government officials on a tour of the $83 million Nassau Container Port and Gladstone Freight Terminal. Marc A.R. Bean, Bermuda's minister of environment, planning and infrastructure strategy, and his permanent decretary, Derrick S. Binns, were keen to see the facilities because their government has a similar desire to relocate commercial shipping interests from the country's downtown district. Mr Binns said: "Minister Bean was most impressed with the willingness of the multiple stakeholders to work together for the greater good of the Bahamas in the relocation of the port from Bay Street. "He was also impressed with the speed at which the Gladstone Freight Terminal was constructed. As Bermuda considers the redevelopment of its own waterfront, the lessons learned from the Bahamas will place us in good stead." The Arawak Port Development is targeted for completion by the 2012 second quarter at a total cost of $83 million.
