THE Grand Isle Resort and Spa's expansion plans demonstrate a confidence in Exuma, the island's Chamber of Commerce president said yesterday, telling Tribune Business various infrastructure developments were still necessary to improve its attraction to investors.
Floyd Armbrister, who is also the DNA's Exuma candidate, said a proposed $5 million expansion at the $110 million Grand Isle development "demonstrates confidence in the island and we always welcome that.
"I recognise that Grand Isle has always been, in my opinion, one of the best properties on the island of Exuma, and they have contributed significantly not only through the staff they hire but to the economy. We encourage investments like Grand Isle to Exuma. We note that there are some positive inquiries into Exuma as of late, and this also would increase the confidence of other persons looking to invest in the island of Exuma."
After going into receivership in 2010, a Canadian investor bought out 31 villas at Grand Isle. A total of 47 homes are now privately owned, with the remaining 31 remaining for sale.
Mr Armbrister said Exuma's economic outlook was moving in a positive direction, noting that infrastructure developments were still necessary to increase investor confidence.
He added: "I think one of the challenges we are facing is infrastructural improvements. I think we need an upgrade to the airport in Moss Town, and improvements to the docking facilities. I think the Government intends to build a hospital, which will give more confidence and comfort to investors.
"We also need some development to roads. Because of wear and tear, many roads have narrowed and it makes it more difficult to travel."
Mr Armbrister said the Government should also look at granting concessions to help the construction industry, which would ultimately create more employment opportunities in the sector.
