AMIDST the endless rallies, political scandals and ever-increasing crime rate, a group of dance enthusiasts has gotten together to offer an "enjoyable and engaging" event for young people in the form of a hip hop dance workshop.
Featuring well-known choreographer Lawrence "Larry" Albright, who has worked with artists like Common, Nelly and Sean Kingston, the "Dance For Life" workshop is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 10, at the New Providence Community Centre on Blake Road.
"There is no doubt that young Bahamians need enjoyable interactive activities to engage both their minds and bodies. That's the mission of the Dance for Life One Day Dance Workshop Initiative," said organisers.
"The workshop is an opportunity to study the art form of dance with an international instructor and choreographer. The objective is to create and offer a positive and community-oriented environment where young people can come and express themselves."
Coordinator and event manager Regina Smith said dance has been a source of inspiration in her life.
"I credit my continual pursuit of excellence to the participation in the arts at an early age. Participation in dance not only served as a form of personal expression, but it also taught me the value of commitment, discipline and hard work. I've always been an advocate for young people to be given a creative outlet. I can only hope that others share this vision with me," she said.
The workshop will begin at 8.30am with a meet and greet with the guest teacher and choreographer. The Dance for Life Workshop is open to ages 10-16.
Choreographer Lawrence "Larry" Albright has been choreographing, teaching, performing and training in his style of hip hop for 14 years throughout the US and in other countries around the world.
He has choreographed for music videos such as Mohomi's "Bumpy Ride", Sean Kingston's "Fire Burning", and Sophia Del Carmen' "No Te Quiero".
He has been featured as an opening act for artists such as Nelly, Common, Lil Mo and Fabulous.
Larry has also made an appearance on MTV's "My Super Sweet 16" where he opened for Pitbull. Although he loves to perform, he said his passion lies in teaching young kids. His dream is to travel the world and introduce kids to the art form of dance. His teaching experience to date includes having taught at various dance conventions and at the following universities: Rutgers University, Florida International University and Florida State University. Currently, he is the lead choreographer for the new Interscope recording artist J Randall.
All cheerleaders, dance teams, and anyone who loves to move is invited to come out and participate in the workshop.
Attendees will be awarded a certificate of participation upon completion of the workshop.
"We thought that would be an added bonus to the kids to show our gratitude for their participation and dedication of their time," said Ms Smith. "We want the dance community to join together and promote an atmosphere of unity and fun
A portion of the event's proceeds will be donated to the Bilney Lane Children's Home. All interested parents can check out the event on Facebook at 'Dance For Life - A One Day Dance Workshop'.
