Desperation compromises integrity

EDITOR, The Tribune. THE mistake made by Perry Christie to select Perry Gomez as a candidate was literally confessed by the Archbishop of the Anglican Church Drexel Gomez's presence. It was an admission that the seat is in serious trouble for the PLP. The question is how come a top clergyman in the Bahamas for decades who had the respect of people of all political stripes, finally allowed his personal preference to take priority over the people who he led and would take precedence over his faith. What will happen if other equally influential clergy did the same thing? The PLP would be hollering holy hell if the FNM did the same thing? I personally know several Anglicans who are embarrassed that their denomination has been prostituted on the altar of political preference. I know for sure that even some from the Gomez family have expressed disgust that a man who enjoyed the respect of many have stooped just to cater to a political party that he knows has a serious history of corruption. Is he in agreement with the many disgraceful incidences that have happened during the PLP reign? Is this an endorsement of the corruption and the slackness of the Anna Nicole saga too? I am somewhat baffled that Archbishop Drexel Gomez, who was one of the Commissioners at the Inquiry in 1984, issued a minority report that spoke about the $3.5 million in the personal bank account of Sir Lynden that was accounted for in such a way that it did not remove all doubt that it might have been tied to unsavoury transactions. Is the good Bishop now saying that after all of that he is comfortable now? This smacks of what is commonly known as integrity. The fact that Bishop Gomez came dressed in his "uniform" that is used to differentiate him from the ordinary people must have been intentional, designed to use psychology on the people who would relax their opinion because he came "in the name of the Lord". Is the good bishop using the "cloth" to "hoodwink" the unsuspecting voters of North Andros? Is this a game? Can we trust anything he says anymore, has he lost it? It seems that this PLP thing has more affects on ones behaviour than the church does; no wonder many have already lost our way. I would take this confusion a little further, on the way to the circus, there is great anxiety to see the elephant and acrobatic manoeuvrings, but are delayed and distracted by the side show. The people of Andros must only see the archbishop's visit as "the great side show." Has the Archbishop now opened himself to the repercussions accorded anyone who mounts a political platform? Let the chips fall where they may. I promise that more Bahamians are upset with his behaviour than he would ever imagine and no amount of explanation could explain away his poor judgment. Now we know for sure who was hiding under that gown all this time. IVOINE W INGRAHAM Nassau, March 5, 2012.
