'Fierce competition' expected on day 2 of Nassau Bowling Championships

By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net DAY two of the initial Nassau Bowling Championships is slated to continue tonight at Mario's Bowling & Entertainment Center. And if the results were as keen as they were on Monday (opening day), the competition should be fierce. Leonardo 'Lee' Davis, a three-time national champion, got off to a great start as he bowled a huge 1,094 five-game set for an average of 218 to lead the men's division. He was followed closely by Tyrone Knowles with a total of 1,046 and Mario Brown with 1,045. The trio sit in that same order in the A category. Leading the way in the B category are Steve Bonamy and Ryan Davis, both with 972 pinfalls for an average of 194.4. Former Bahamas Cricket Association president Greg Taylor occupies third with 962 pins for a 188.6 average. On the women's side, Betsy Taylor took the early lead with a total of 906 pins. She was followed by Driskell Rolle with 873 and Monique Miller with 860. Rolle, however, is out front in the A category, while Miller sits in second and Janice Hoyte is third with 799. Taylor heads the B category with Jacqueline Carter in second with 837 and Shanta Kerr in third with 777. In the C category, Kayla Nixon has the lead with 751 with Rochelle McPhee in second with 745 and Janice Davis is third with 708. Shanique Lightbourne heads the D category with 767, Andrea Hepburn is second with 696 and Donniecea Rahming is third with 645. The tournament, sponsored by Scotiabank (Bahamas), Leno Corporate Services, Fidelity Bank & Mario's Bowling, is scheduled to continue 7pm tonight. The top four bowlers in each category will advance after 15 games to a three-game knockout series. The bottom two will then be eliminated and the final two will advance to play in the live TV finals set for Sunday on Cable Bahamas. It's the first major tournament played here since the Rothmans National Bowling Championships was played at the former Village Bowling Lanes back in the 1990s. The tournament is a prelude to the first International Bowling Tournament that is scheduled to be staged at Mario's Bowling in the summer.
