Get ready for hurricanes

By MIKE LIGHTBOURN THE outlook for this hurricane season may be "near normal", but it takes only one storm to cause severe home damage. Between now and November 30, experts predict nine to 15 named storms for the Atlantic. The Bahamas is located in a hurricane belt and we all know what these storms can do. We need to be ready to protect our property in the event of a hurricane. Now's the time to take action. Start by making sure your roof is solid and has hurricane straps. Trim any large trees and branches that can damage your roof. Check your storm shutters and emergency equipment. If you don't have shutters, get plywood to fit your windows and nails and store them in a dry location. If you have one, service your generator and keep the fuel topped up. If you don't have it, consider catastrophic insurance. Talk to an insurance professional about property replacement costs, including contents, the level of deductibles and any exclusions. If you have one, review your policy. Does it cover flood, wind and storm damage? Insurance companies won't approve new policies or upgrades once a hurricane watch has been issued for the Bahamas.
