Knights dominate Stingrays

By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net SPARKED by a balanced scoring effort, stingy defence and a seemingless endless streak of fastbreaks, the CR Walker Knights dominated the only game in GSSSA Senior Basketball play on the schedule yesterday. Four of the Knights starters reached double figures as they blew away the CV Bethel Stingrays 85-37 at the DW Davis Gymnasium. Van Hutchinson scored a game high 28 points, Nashad Mackey added 18, Laquan Nairn finished with 15 while Prince Braynen chipped in with 14. CR Walker led wire to wire in the contest after Braynen scored on the opening tip. The Stingrays were able to hang around in the first quarter thanks to a foul happy Knights defence and a pair of three point plays from Kamal Murphy who led the Stingrays with eight points. The Knights led by just seven after the opening period, 20-13. The second quarter sealed the game out of reach when the Knights outscored the Stingrays, 26-7, in the period to take command for good. Hutchinson opened with a lay-up on the first possession and sparked the run for the Knights. CV Bethel was held without a basket for nearly half the period and scored their first field goal with 4:35 left to play in the period. Nairn's play on the defensive end led to several fastbreak points and a trio of consecutive scores. Hutchinson followed with a half court steal and breakaway dunk to give the Knights a 40-20 lead with 1:35 left to play in the half. They took a 46-20 lead into intermission. The run continued in the third for the Knights as they outscored the Stingrays, 28-11, in the period. The lead reached 30 for the first time on a driving lay-up from Braynen for a 53-22 lead early on. The sharpshooting Mackey hit four of his six three pointers in the third quarter, the last of which gave the Knights a 64-24 lead. CR Walker took a 74-31 lead into the fourth and cruised to the 48 point win with the reserves on the floor for much of the fourth. In other Senior Boys action, The Doris Johnson Mystic Marlins won by default of the GHS Magic, while the Stingrays' Senior Girls also took a default win over the Magic.
