The opening day of the 30th Hugh Campbell basketball tournament featured five games to begin play with matchups between GSSSA and BAISS schools dominating the schedule.
Doris Johnson Mystic
Marlins - 46
Jordan Prince William
Falcons - 42
The Mystic Marlins withstood a late run with a key basket in the game's closing moments to hold on for the first win of this year's tournament.
Leading by just two points with less than 20 seconds left to play, Javon Calderon sealed the win for Doris Johnson with a reverse layup. Calderon finished with 10 points while Gerrard Ferguson led the team with 11 points.
The Falcons led 15-9 after a dominant first quarter. The Mystic Marlins rallied in the second quarter and tied at 19 when Calderon tipped in a missed jumper. They led 23-21 at the half.
Two ties and three lead changes took place over the third quarter before the Mystic Marlins took a 36-30 lead at the end of the period. The lead grew to as much as nine when Ferguson opened the fourth quarter with a three from the left wing for a 39-30 lead.
The Falcons would rally in the fourth when a basket by Marcian Higgins trimmed the deficit to just two, 44-42. However, they couldn't recover a defensive rebound despite three missed shot opportunities.
Sameko Adderley led the Falcons with 12 points while Alvin Robinson and Higgins each finished with eight.
St John's College Giants - 40
Government High Magic - 21
The Giants used the lopsided win against the GSSSA bottom feeders as an opportunity to test their younger less experienced players.
After a closely contested first half, the Giants outscored the Magic 12-4 in the third quarter to pull away. They led 10-8 after the first quarter and 18-12 at the half.
In the third period, the Giants opened up a lead by as much as 12 which reached 10 for the first time on a runner by Kieran Mortimer.
With a 22-12 lead with 4:46 left to play in the quarter, the Giants allowed just four points over the remainder of the quarter.
With the starters back in the game for the fourth quarter, the lead reached 20, 36-16, on a pair of free throws from Anwar Neilly with 1:52 left to play.
Neilly led the Giants with eight points, Mortimer had six and Kyle Turnquest finished with six. Ernie Hanna led the Magic with nine points.
CC Sweeting Cobras - 48
Queen's College Comets - 37
The GSSSA runners up put together just two good quarters in the final game of the opening session and the shorthanded Comets gave them all they could handle in a game which was closer than the final score indicated.
After opening up scoring on their first seven possessions and jumping out to a 21-1 lead, the Cobras struggled to close out the Comets which suited up just six players for the game.
The Comets outscored the Cobras 10-4 in the second quarter and ended the second on a 6-0 run.
In the third, the Cobras led by as much as 16 points. However, the Comets managed to stage run after run to remain in contention.
A layup from the Comets' Wilton Johnson trimmed the deficit to 34-26 and the Cobras led 35-28 headed into the fourth quarter.
On the opening possession of the fourth, a Johnson three pointer just rimmed out which led to a Rashad Davis score on the other end.
Davis chased down and swatted what seemed to be an easy fast break layup on the ensuing possession and sparked a game ending run to put the Comets away late in the fourth.
A Roosevelt Whylly two-handed dunk in traffic gave the Cobras a 48-29 lead with just under two minutes left to play. Whylly finished with 16 points and nine rebounds while Davis added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Angelo Lockhart finished with five points and five assists. Johnson led the Comets with 15 points while Lerecus Armbrister finished with 12.
In the evening session, the defending Hugh Campbell champions RM Bailey Pacers topped the Teleos Cherubims while current GSSSA champions CI Gibson Rattlers got by the St Anne's Blue Waves.
