Man United wipes out City lead in Premier League

LONDON (AP) -- Manchester United wiped out Manchester City's lead at the top of the Premier League, beating Stoke 2-0 as its neighbour lost 1-0 at Everton with the help of another Landon Donovan assist. Darron Gibson, who left Old Trafford in January, scored in the 60th minute off a short pass from Donovan. The American midfielder has assisted on Everton's last three goals and four in seven games during his loan from Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy. United won 2-0 at home on penalty kicks by Javier Hernandez in the 38th minute and Dimitar Berbatov in the 53rd. City and United are both 17-3-3 with 54 points, with City ahead on goal difference. Third-place Tottenham (15-4-4) beat Wigan 3-1, moving seven points ahead of Chelsea (12-5-6) which was held to a 1-1 tie at Swansea. Liverpool (10-5-8) climbed above Arsenal (11-8-3) into fifth place with a 3-0 win at Wolverhampton. Chelsea rescues 1-1 draw at Swansea in EPL SWANSEA, Wales (AP) -- A last-gasp own goal by Neil Taylor gave Chelsea a 1-1 draw at Swansea on Tuesday, as the Welsh club was narrowly denied another impressive home victory in the Premier League. Scott Sinclair had given Swansea the lead when the former Blues winger volleyed the ball over Petr Cech five minutes before halftime after a poor defensive header by Jose Bosingwa. Swansea, which stunned Arsenal at Liberty Stadium two weeks ago with a 3-2 win, looked set to take another big scalp when Chelsea defender Ashley Cole was sent off for a second booking in the 86th. However, the visitors still leveled when Bosingwa's shot was deflected into the net by Taylor in injury time. Liverpool beats Wolves 3-0 in Premier League WOLVERHAMPTON, England (AP) -- Having advanced in both domestic cup competitions in the past week, Liverpool got its Premier League campaign back on track with a 3-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday. Out-of-form striker Andy Carroll scored his first league goal since October 29 , Craig Bellamy added another in the 61st and Dirk Kuyt wrapped up the scoring in the 78th as Liverpool had just its second win in the past seven league matches. Liverpool is now only four points behind Chelsea in the final qualifying spot for the Champions League. Wolves stay next-to-last. Liverpool reached the League Cup final by knocking out Manchester City last Wednesday and beat Man United to advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday. Fan handcuffs himself to post during Everton match LIVERPOOL, England (AP) -- A fan interrupted Everton's home match against Manchester City for several minutes Tuesday night when he handcuffed himself to a goal post. The supporter invaded the Goodison Park field about five minutes before halftime and handcuffed himself to City goalkeeper Joe Hart's left post. Police officers took about three minutes to uncut him from the post before the Premier League match could resume with the score still at 0-0. Gabon sails through as Group C winner FRANCEVILLE, Gabon (AP) -- Gabon sailed through to the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations as Group C winner on Tuesday, leaving the last two quarterfinal places to be decided on the final day of group matches. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the decisive goal in a tight 1-0 win over Tunisia at Stade de Franceville as Gabon surprisingly finished the first round with three wins. On Wednesday, Ghana, Guinea and Mali all have a shot at the two remaining last eight spots from Group D. In Group C's other game, Morocco salvaged some pride with a 1-0 win over Niger via a second-half goal from Younes Belhanda. Zambia was distracted ahead of its quarterfinal against Sudan when midfielder Clifford Mulenga was sent home for breaking a team curfew.
