Wigan beats Arsenal 2-1 to boost survival hopes

By STEVE DOUGLAS AP Sports Writer LONDON (AP) -- Wigan followed its surprising victory over Manchester United by winning 2-1 at third-place Arsenal on Monday night, boosting its hopes of avoiding relegation. Wigan built a 2-0 lead on goals by Franco di Santo in the seventh minute and Jordi Gomez in the eighth. Thomas Vermaelen halved the deficit in the 21st. Wigan (8-16-10) is 16th with 34 points, five above the relegation zone. It won 2-1 at Liverpool on March 24 and beat visiting Manchester United 1-0 last Wednesday. Arsenal (20-10-4) is third with 64 points, five above Tottenham and Newcastle (both 17-8-8) and seven in front of Chelsea (16-8-9). The top four teams qualify for next season's Champions League. Getafe defeat Sevilla 5-1 MADRID (AP) -- Nicolas "Miku" Fedor's scored twice as Getafe rallied past Sevilla 5-1. Alvaro Negredo's goal on an overhead kick gave the visitors a 19th-minute lead, but Miguel Torres tied it in the 35th and Mehdi Lacen put the hosts ahead in the 49th. Miku converted a pass from Pedro Rios in the 63rd, and Rios made it 4-1 with a header in the 69th. Two minutes later, Rios set up Fedor for his second. Getafe and Sevilla (both 12-12-9) are among five clubs with 45 points, one behind sixth-place Osasuna for the final Europa League place. Rennes beat struggling Nice 3-1 PARIS (AP) -- Winger Julien Feret scored once and set up another goal as Rennes beat struggling Nice 3-1 to move into fifth place in the French league, boosting its chances of qualifying for the Europa League. Feret put Rennes (14-9-9) ahead in the 23rd minute with a low shot, and Tongo Doumbia headed in from Feret's free kick in the 44th. Right back Francois Clerc scored his fourth goal of the season for Nice (8-14-10) from 20 yards in the 59th.
