DESIGNER 101
By Teri M. Bethel
Straw craft instructor Emily Munnings is determined to paint just about anything she can get her hands on. The designer of Mavis M. Straw Bags was eager to learn every bit of texture painting techniques shared to enhance her line of products.
When word reached Eleuthera that the designer of the Teri Monique line of custom painted handbags was coming to Eleuthera to share her texture painting secrets, Ms Munnings along with a number of Eleuthera's finest crafters took note.
"I just knew I had to be in the class," said Ms Munnings. "There seemed to be obstacles at every turn but I would not allow that to stop me." When asked if it was worth her time, Ms. Munnings smiled and proudly showed her collection. "This class has done so much for me."
The painting classes were held in the evening, so between classes she would map out her new designs and prepare her products for the final day of presentations. Nothing was wasted. Sample papers were transformed into beautiful objects, scarves, clothing, jewelry and bags skillfully painted to reflect her tropical surroundings.
Now that her creativity has been stirred and techniques applied, Ms Munnings is hoping that someone of international standing will recognise her work and help to open great doors of opportunity.
"I've been creating straw bags from 1995 and have added coconut craft and jewelry to my line of products," said Ms Munnings, who beamed while sharing that Ms Bolivia from the Miss Universe Pageant purchased one of her custom handbags while visiting Eleuthera.
Ms Munnings is a full time designer residing in Savannah Sound, Eleuthera. She presently sells at local trade shows.
