FRESH off his silver medal performance at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, Demetrius Pinder opened his outdoor season with a second place finish in the men's 200 metres at the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational.
The Grand Bahamian native, representing Nike, led a field of Bahamians competing at the one day meet in Coral Gables, Miami, on Saturday.
Using the event to improve on the sprint aspect of his race, Pinder clocked 20.23 seconds to trail Auburn's Harry Adams, who won in 20.10.
Two other Bahamians competed in heat three. Grand Bahamian Geno Jones was third in 21.70 while Lavardo Smith was sixth in 22.24.
In the men's 100, Jones ended up sixth in heat two in 10.77, while Smith finished behind him in 10.85.
In heat three, Marcus Thompson finished second in 10.84 well ahead of Cordero Bonamy who was fourth in heat three in 10.88.
Wesley Neymour, the 800 specialist, stepped down to run the 400 where he was second in heat one in 47.09. Jamal Moss followed in 47.34. The winning time was 45.56 by Deon Lendore of Texas A&M.
On the women's side, the best performance came from veteran sprinter Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie who finished fourth in the 100 in 11.44. American Shalonda Solomon won in 11.26, while Jamaican Sheri-Ann Brooks was second in 11.33 and American Lauryn Williams was third in 11.34.
In heat two, two Auburn teammates clashed as senior Nivea Smith got second in 11.62 and sophomore V'Alonee Robinson was fourth in 11.79. Miami's Tarika Williams won in 11.58.
Grand Bahamian Cottrell Martin was the lone Bahamian to win a heat. She took the third of the four heats in the women's 400 in 55.79. Lanece Clarke contested heat two where she was third in 54.68.
And in the 100 hurdles, Krystal Bodie, a senior at Auburn, was fifth in first of three heats in the women's 400 hurdles in 1:01.44.
Meanwhile, Ivanique Kemp was burning up the track at the UTEP Invitational at Kidd Field in El Paso, Texas. Representing Arkansas, she was second in the 100 hurdles in 13.55. The race was won by Janice Jackson of UTEP in 13.48.
