OUR very own athletes standout in several marquee events in the latest release of the IAAF Top Lists yesterday.
Bahamians appear among the top 10 performers of the young outdoor season in five events, including the women's 100m and 200m and the men's 200m, high jump and triple jump.
Sheniqua 'Q' Ferguson leads the way as the top ranked sprinter in the 100m after her performance in the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, Alabama, last weekend.
Ferguson posted the year's third fastest time of 11.10s in the heat and returned in the final to post the top mark of 11.07s. It was also an A qualifying mark for this year's London Olympics as Ferguson went under the standard of 11.29s.
Anthonique Strachan maintains the 9th fastest time of 11.22s recorded in March. In the 200m, Ferguson has posted the third fastest time of 22.64s, while Shaunae Miller's 22.70s ranks fourth and Strachan ranks 8th in 22.85s.
Justin Gatlin's performance over the weekend knocked Demetrius Pinder down to fourth in the 200m with his time of 20.23 posted earlier this month in Coral Gables.
Donald Thomas' outing at the War Eagle Invitational boosted him to fourth on the top list. Thomas, representing Nike, won with a leap of 2.26m (7-5), just off the Olympic B qualifying mark of 2.28m. The A standard is 2.31m. Thomas will end up in a two-way tie with American James White for fourth on the IAAF world list. Ryan Ingraham finished third with 2.17m (7-1 1/2).
Leevan "Superman" Sands' winning jump in Auburn this weekend placed him just outside the top 10 in the triple jump.
Competing for Mizuno, he had four consecutive jumps in the 16-meter range after opening with a 13.99m. His best leap came on his fifth attempt at 16.99m or 55-feet, 5-inches for the win. He went under the B qualifying mark for London of 16.85m and just shy of the A standard of 17.20m.
Sands, who went on to win the Olympic bronze medal in the triple jump in Beijing, China, in 2008, is scheduled to compete again in Guadeloupe on May 1 before he competes in Jamaica on May 6.
