A TEENAGER has pleaded not guilty to a charge of voyeurism, denying that he made nude visual recordings of a woman.

Kemelio Gray, a 19-year-old airport maintenance worker, of Jubilee Gardens, is accused of making recordings of the victim on June 15 in circumstances giving rise to her reasonable expectation of privacy and, without her consent, unlawfully published the recordings.

After his not guilty plea in the magistrate’s court Gray was granted bail on condition that he has no contact with the complainant and reports every Saturday to the police station nearest to his home. The next hearing will be on November 23.

In a separate case Aaron Toote, 24, of Crawford Street, pleaded not guilty to a charge of intentional libel.

It was alleged that he unlawfully published defamatory matter about a woman intending to defame her.

After his not guilty plea, Toote elected to have the case heard in the magistrate’s court. His attorney Perry Albury told the court that the complainant was present and wanted to withdraw the charges.

The complainant confirmed her intention to Magistrate Bethell who asked if she had spoken to prosecutors about withdrawing her charges. She said she hadn’t.

Magistrate Bethell said the court “needs to be assured” that the complainant isn’t under pressure and being forced to withdraw her charges, so she must speak with prosecutors prior to a withdrawal.

The police prosecutor present said the complainant could meet her at the prosecution’s office on Tuesday, August 7.

Magistrate Bethell set Toote’s bail at $7,500 on the condition that Gray reports weekly to his nearest police station and has no contact with the complainant – as the prosecutor didn’t want the alleged victim “under duress” until she met with her.

Toote was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison until his bail is posted and the hearing was adjourned to Wednesday, August 8.
