Members of the Bahamas Institute of Chartered Accountants’ (BICA) newly-elected Council recently paid courtesy calls on Michael Halkitis, minister of state for finance, and the Superintendent of the Insurance Commission, Michele Fields. These meetings were held on July 30 and July 31, 2012, respectively.
The main goals of these visits were to strengthen the relationship that exists between these agencies and encourage new collaborative efforts.
Jasmine Davis, BICA president of BICA, said an important part of the Council’s focus for its 2012-2013 term was to enhance collaboration with the Government and regulators in an effort to strengthen the accounting profession.
She added that through collaboration, it was hoped BICA will broaden its Continuing Professional Education (CPE) seminars to encompass accounting matters relevant to government reporting standards and the insurance industry.
Among other matters discussed were BICA’s proposed amendments to the Public Accountants Act, improving the Government’s revenue collection process, and the Institute’s future goals.
BICA is the regulatory body for the accounting profession in the Bahamas, with more than 500 members and 280 licensees.
