A PAIR of contrasting finishes in both divisions highlighted play in the New Providence Softball Association (NPSA) on Tuesday night.
In the women’s matchup, the Bommer G Operators needed just three innings to dispose of the ASAP Assassins 29-2.
Meanwhile, in the men’s game, the Blue Chips Buccaneers won 13-10 over the CCG Mighty Mitts.
Desiree Coakley pitched a no-hitter for the Operators who gave up their only runs of the game in the opening inning due to five errors.
They totalled 16 errors on the day but came away unscathed because of the performance by Coakley and the Operators’ lineup at the plate.
Bommer G took a 9-2 lead after the first inning and piled on the lead each frame, scoring eight runs in the second and 12 in the third before the mercy-rule took effect.
Lathera Brown finished 4-5 with five runs and two RBI, Vantrice Bowleg finished 3-5 which included two doubles and three runs, while Heresa Miller went 2-4 with three RBI.
In a back and forth game which featured two ties and two lead changes, the Buccaneers were able to hold on for the win, scoring in every inning but the second.
Both teams came out strong on the offensive end, leading to a 3-3 tie at the end of the first inning.
The Mighty Mitts took a brief one-run lead in the second, before the Bucs regained the advantage with two runs scored in the fifth.
Blue Chip added another pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings for a 9-4 lead headed into the bottom of the fifth.
The Mighty Mitts would rally but would fall just short of a tie game, as they trimmed the deficit, 9-8.
The Bucs would outscore the Mighty Mitts 4-2 the rest of the way to seal the win.
Lamar Watkins led the way at the plate with a 5-5 night, which included a triple and two doubles, and also scored three runs.
Daniel Demeritte went 3-5 with one run and four RBI, while Greg Gardiner went 2-4 with two runs and two RBI.
David Sweeting led the Mighty Mitts 3-4 with four runs and one RBI, Lorenzo Carter was 2-2 with three runs and one RBI and Chris McPhee was 2-4 with one run and two RBI.
Deval Storr got the win while Alphonso Albury was tagged with the loss.
