WITH Tropical Storm Issac set to hit the southern Bahamas this weekend, The National Emergency Management Agency has released several preparation and safety tips for the upcoming weather.
Residents can be victims of storm threats without being in the direct path of the storm, NEMA warns. These threats include: Inland winds, falling trees/branches, flying debris, and tornados/microbursts.
In preparation for a hurricane, Bahamians should be sure to have supplies stored in sturdy, water resistant, easy to carry containers such as a duffel bag or back-pack.
These supplies include: A three-day supply of water, one gallon per person per day; a three-day supply of non-perishable foods and a non-electric can-opener; a first aid kid, including a four week supply of prescription medicines and extra copies of prescriptions; and cash as in the event of a power loss, banks may be closed so cheques and credit cards cannot be accepted and ATMs cannot operate.
Other supplies include: Battery powered radio and extra batteries, flash-lights or lantern and fuel, photo ID, bleach to treat water, coolers for food and ice, blankets and sleeping bags, infant necessities and toiletries.
Pet owners are advised to have a supply of pet food and other pet supplies and to bring animals indoors or turn them loose before the storm.
NEMA also advises people to keep their cars fuelled should an evacuation be necessary, store drinking water in clean containers as water systems may become contaminated or disrupted, and secure outdoor objects.
Mosquito repellent, water purification kits, camera, and quiet games and books for children are also recommended.
More information about what to do before, during and after a hurricane or tropical storm can be obtained from NEMA at 322-6081 or 322-6085 and www.bahamas.gov.bs/nema.
