Sherice Major, a popular Bahamian entertainment blogger, is doing her best to lead the pack when it comes to celebrity gossip online.
Her website, SheSoMajor, has established itself as the go to place for the latest celebrity news, with a steady following of readers in Europe, the United States, and the Bahamas. The entertainment blog started four years ago, while Sherice was studying journalism in New York City. Her love for ‘being in the know’ when it comes to the lives of celebrities motivated her to act.
“My biggest accomplishment thus far has been building a brand from scratch that is now recognizable not only in The Bahamas but throughout the world. Building a blog that can compete with the giants out there is something I’m very proud of. I most recently went to Europe and met with a few industry experts and for them to be able to give such favourable feedback on the SheSoMajor was which was simply overwhelming,” said Sherice.
“It was the summer of 2009, I was on a break from college, I was broke, homesick and I was bored, so I decided to start a blog. I’ve always been a creative soul, I have a way with words and my sarcasm coupled with my mouth are usually the source of all of my troubles. The perfect combination for my newfound love,” she said.
“I studied journalism and mass communications and being a lover of blogs, it only seemed natural to start my own. New York City gave me so much inspiration. From the fashion, to the celebrities, to the artists. It just was something that slapped me in the face.”
Before starting SheSoMajor, she said it was a tradition to log onto her favourite sites to get her daily dose of celebrity news. She said this became her training and somehow she was able to “carve my own lane.”
When she first started the blog, Sherice said it did not occur that there were Bahamians who enjoyed being immersed in the lives of the rich and famous.
“At the time, I did not see the need for a Bahamian blog geared towards entertainment news. I created the blog not only for Bahamians, but everyone to enjoy. Naturally, because I’m Bahamian, I was able to find favour with Bahamians. Our culture is not one to invest so much time milling over celebrities, but I think now that is changing and I think we might have helped. Our Bahamian readers are absolutely obsessed and we love it,” she said.
Shesomajor.com covers breaking celebrity gossip, news, fashion and entertainment. Even though the blog is entertainment based, it is not limited to entertainment news. Any topic including politics or religion that starts conversations among readers is posted to the site.
“We focus on what is of interest to our readers and pretty much what we find interesting ourselves.”In the past, SheSoMajor has conducted exclusive interviews with celebrities including Boyz II Men, Tami Roman and Kesha Nicols of BasketBall Wives, Emily B, former cast member of VH1’s Love and Hip Hop, and others.
“Apart from providing gossip and entertainment, I am a social media consultant. Although social media has just now taken off in The Bahamas, it has been around for quite some time in the United States. Businesses are just now becoming fully aware of the power of social media and that is where I step in.” SheSoMajor is not only a blog but also a brand Ms Major said will be expanded and developed in the near future.
“There is so much more that we have in store for the brand. We can’t wait until we can share the good news with our readers. Social media is ever evolving and we’re just trying to keep up with it all,” she said.
