TENSIONS are rising between the Haitian and Bahamian communities in Abaco after a young Bahamian man was gunned down on Sunday, The Tribune has learned.
According to sources on the island, police stepped up patrols following the murder of 26-year-old Gregory Bain.
Bain was shot in the back and killed around 3am on Sunday at a Sandy Point motel, after getting into an argument with a group of young men believed to be Haitians residing in the Mud.
Superintendent Noel Curry, officer in charge of the Abaco district said while the argument was between local Bahamians and Haitians, these arguments are not uncommon for that island.
“We are looking into the matter that there may be some problems between the two communities but as far as I am aware, there are no big problems,” he said.
“There was an altercation involving both nationalities, but it is not unusual because from time to time you would have the two different nationalities clashing. Police have everything under control. We have local police as well as detectives out of New Providence assisting us with our investigations. We also have one man in assisting us and we want to question a few more people.”
Bain’s death brought the country’s homicide count to 80 for the year.
Meanwhile, police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a man who shot and attempted to rob a man early yesterday morning.
Police say shortly after 3.30am the victim was on Ross Corner when a lone gunman approached him and demanded cash. When the victim said he had no money, the gunman shot him on the left side of his face and fled on foot.
The victim was taken to hospital where he is listed in serious, but stable condition.
Police are on the hunt for the gunman who was described as a dark male with a red shirt tied around his face. He wore plain blue pants.
In other crime news, a 16-year-old male of Pinewood Gardens is in police custody after he was found in possession of a quantity of dangerous drugs.
Police say around 10.30pm on Monday officers from the Selective Enforcer Unit were on patrol in the Mullings Lane area, where they conducted a search of the suspect and found a quantity of suspected marijuana.
Active police investigations continue.
