THE main branch of Royal Bank of Canada had to be evacuated yesterday morning after someone called in a bomb threat.

According to Fire Services director Walter Evans, the police were notified of the threat shortly after 10am and all staff and customers of the Bay Street bank were ordered to leave the premises immediately.

Mr Evans said police remain unsure about the origin of the threat, but noted that RBC employees and customers were all safely evacuated.

Business at the bank was suspended for almost a hour, while police and Fire Services officers searched the entire building. The search found nothing, Mr Evans said, adding that all employees were accounted for and no injuries were reported.

As a precaution, police cars were sent to other RBC locations where the various branches were closed for a short time.
