THOUGH a new song by up-and-coming Bahamian artist Daynez was meant to poke fun at Bahamians who “cry poor mouth”, the track’s message also speaks to the serious issue of prioritising one’s personal finances.
“Ha’d It Go”, the colloquial expression for what’s up or how are you is the title of the song. While writing, the 22-year-old said he was taken back to his years in high school, when he would be confronted by friends who often used the expression “ha’d it go dutty, do so something for me” to solicit money. This he said became the inspiration for the song. Daynez said seeking handouts is a way of life for some Bahamians. He believes some people who look to others to “do something” for them, have their priorities out of order.
The first verse of the song states: “So you ein believe one day I was walking, this bey come up to me wearing brand new Jordans, and Ralph Lauren, asking me for money, basin, liking man early in the morning, anyway, this bey say let him a slow ten, I’ll give you a fast five, back hand side.”
“I am all about making fun, creative music that people can enjoy. I wanted Bahamians to laugh at themselves, because either you use to beg at one point or you know someone who does. This is how some of us interact with each other on a daily basis. I wanted to put out something that is light hearted and fun,” said Daynez.
“I remember those times when I would harass some people in school. I took all those different instances, drew from my experience and put that into the song,” he told In Ya Ear. Ever since he released the song on social media, Daynez said he has received good responses. Some have even gone as far as branding “Ha’D It Go” as the new and unofficial street anthem, he said. One fan wrote: “I appreciate this song because Daynez did not try to sound American, he kept Bahamian flavour. How he portrayed those who are always begging was real. I could relate to that because I did that before too.” Nadia wrote: “I had this song on replay all day. I love it.” Daynez said he only intended the song to be an internet sensation, however, after getting the responses he did from listeners, he decided to send the track to several local radio houses.
“That was the plan. After I recorded the song, I posted it, just to see what people thought about it. People started telling me how good, and funny the song was and that I should send it to the radio stations. That was what I did. They called me back and told me they liked the song,” he said.
Daynez said while he waits to see how far the song will take him, he has released a similar song, “Who Dis Bui Is” and is working on more releases in the near future. The artist has been working with an independent label in New York for several years. Just recently he celebrated the release of two mix-tapes.
