AN ANGRY mob attacked and stabbed the occupants of a vehicle involved in a traffic accident that left a 13-year-old dead late Wednesday night, police have confirmed.
It happened around 8:30pm on Robinson Road in the area of Miami Street.
Police say the teen was attempting to cross the street when he was struck by a 2000 Honda Accord.
He was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries a short time later.
However, according Supt Ken Strachan, Officer in Charge of the Traffic Division, before police arrived on the scene an “angry mob” attacked the occupants of the vehicle, stabbing two of them and causing a third man to flee.
“After this young child received those serious injuries we had, what could only be described as a mob type behaviour, by members of the public against the persons in the vehicle,” he said.
“The vehicle was completely destroyed by rocks and other objects and two persons were taken to hospital. One person was stabbed multiple times about the body and another person fled the area. There were varying degrees of injuries involved, this was a serious attack. The vehicle is so bad we are trying to figure out what was caused by the incident and what was destroyed by the crowd.”
Supt Strachan said no one has been arrested in this incident as yet, but police are activity searching for the assailants and charges will be filed. He did not say whether it was the driver of the vehicle who was stabbed or a passenger.
“We are looking to charge the attackers, we do not encourage that sort of behaviour. A number of persons launched an attack on these individuals,” he said.
“We want to advise against that kind of behaviour and we want to remind the public that doesn’t help the situation. Let the police do their jobs. We want to ask the motoring public and road users to exercise a little more patience. There has been an adjustment in the make up of most of the major roads and so a re-education of the roads is need. Also, please stop letting kids across the road anywhere. They are going to run and they run without looking most times. They do not pay attention.”
Supt Strachan also urged the third man who ran to turn himself into police so investigations can move forward.
According to statistics released earlier this week, the number of traffic-related deaths so far this year has outpaced the number recorded this time last year.
This latest traffic accident marks the 42nd fatality for 2012.
