POLICE yesterday said they were following significant leads into who is responsible for a spate of armed robberies that have targeted women motorists.

While Paul Rolle, Central Detective Unit chief, assured the public that the culprits would soon be in their custody, Superintendent Stephen Dean confirmed that police were profiling possible suspects to narrow down their search.

“We are following significant information,” he said. “There are a number of persons who were just released from prison that we are profiling right now.

“The police are giving this matter a lot of attention and are pooling great resources into tracking down these people. We are going to have to look at some things specifically. Of those I cannot go into too much detail.”

On Sunday, officials warned women motorists to be on the look out for four armed men who are intentionally bumping cars from behind in an effort to rob drivers of their valuables.

Mr Rolle at the time said that police received several reports, mostly from women who said that the culprits were driving a gold coloured Honda CRV or a Ford Explorer. Most of the women drive late model Hondas and Nissan Maximas.

During the course of the year, police admitted that they were having troubling controlling armed robberies throughout the country after eight were recorded in one weekend. In addition, the number of armed robberies have continued to spiral in comparison to other kinds of recorded crime.

“We have had reports,” Supt Rolle said, “concerning persons being robbed by four men in an SUV. The victims have reported to us that they were bumped and then when they get out to inspect the damage, two armed men get out of the SUV and rob them.

“As it is the height of the Christmas season, we want people to know that they can be targeted.”

The police are asking anyone with information to contact them.
