PRIME Minister Perry Christie yesterday said Dr Elliston Rahming will remain Superintendent of Prisons until the government is able to find a suitable replacement for him.
His announcement came outside the Cabinet office, where he moved to quash widespread reports that Leon Bethel, Assistant Commissioner of Police, was set to replace Dr Rahming.
The prison chief has been appointed the new Bahamas Ambassador to Washington, DC.
ACP Bethel currently serves as the officer in charge of operations.
Mr Christie said: “I have the responsibility of appointing senior officers as well as ambassadors and so the question came up as to the availability of Dr Elliston Rahming and the suitability of someone to replace him. Discussions would have taken place but the net result would have been that Leon Bethel remains a police officer. He is called to the bar as a police officer.
“He sees himself as having a career on the police force and so we did not reach a point where Leon Bethel was selected to replace Dr Rahaming.
ACP Bethel has served in several areas of the force, including the Central and Southern Divisions in New Providence, the Central Detective Unit, and the Eight Mile Rock and Freeport Divisions in the Grand Bahama District.
