Ceremony for JFK memorial

A MEMORIAL plaque commemorating the 50th anniversary of United States President John F Kennedy’s visit to the Bahamas will be re-installed during a ceremony tomorrow.

Prime Minster Perry Christie, Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell and senior US Embassy officials will be in attendance.

On December 22, 1962, President Kennedy met in Nassau with British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan to discuss the UK’s Polaris programme. The resultant Nassau Agreement saw the start of a submarine-based British nuclear weapons system.

After the talks, the leaders announced the formation of a multilateral North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) nuclear force.
