A team of national champions will represent the Bahamas in the United States Junior Open on July 27.
“This is one of our most important judo tournaments for the year. Financing is always a challenge,” said D’Arcy Rahming, president of the Bahamas Judo Federation. “We need sponsors. We appreciate very much the support of the public.”
The team members have been preparing for a year with a special summer training camp in which they train 30 hours a week during the summer.
“While other kids are playing video games these kids are training,” said national coach Chrisnell Cooper, a graduate of the Olympic judo programme at Semmelweis University in Hungary.
“We began with a lot of fitness and strength training and are now concentrating on throwing and body movement.”
Said 13-year-old Elaina Cuffy, last year’s US Junior Open Champion: “I’m excited and looking forward to retaining my title.”
“Beating the competition and standing at the top of the podium is my goal,” said Artio McPhee, 13, a bronze medallist last year.
Persons or any organisation wishing to provide financial assistance should contact the Bahamas Judo Federation at 364-6773.
