FREEPORT - Plans and preparations are being finalised for the 39th annual independence celebrations on Grand Bahama.

Dr Michael Darville, Minister for Grand Bahama, said activities are scheduled to take place from July 6 leading up to Independence Day on July 10.

Dr Darville and members of the Independence Celebration Committee announced plans for this year's celebration on Monday at the Office of the Prime Minister.

This year's theme is 'United in Love and Service'.

"We are asking the local business community to partner with government and the Independence Committee to assist with the cost of the celebration.

"We in the Ministry of Grand Bahama are excited that this year's celebrations will meet the community's expectation and lay the foundation for a grand celebration for next year's 40th celebrations," he said.

The activities are as follows:

• July 6 - T-shirt and National Pride Day.

• July 7 - A basketball tournament hosted by local government councils in East and West Grand Bahama.

• July 8 - Church service hosted by the West District Council.

• July 9 - Ministry of Tourism 'People to People' Tea Party.

• July 10 - District Family Fun Day in East, West and Central Grand Bahama.

Mary Culmer, administrator of the Red Cross, said on Friday, July 6, the organisation will be partnering with the committee to hold a fundraising 'Down Home Independence Dance' at the Eric Sam Centre at Church of the Ascension.

Ms Culmer said entertainment will be provided by Wilfred Solomon and the Magnetics.

The Ministry of Tourism is also partnering with the committee to host a tea party. Debbie Huyler, manager of MOT, said the event is scheduled to take place at the GB Yacht Club from noon to 3pm.

Carmeta Miller, Independence Committee member, said the independence celebrations will kick off on July 9 with performances from youth bands and groups that will sing and perform musical recitals.

She said a flag raising ceremony would follow.

Minister of Grand Bahama Dr Michael Darville will deliver the independence message.

Bahamians are asked to come out and support these activities as the country celebrates its independence.
