BEN Albury, the DNA's Montagu candidate, used martial arts yesterday to restrain a thief who tried to escape from a defence force officer.

The man was caught trying to break into the Chinese Embassy on Village Road.

Chris Lowe, an onlooker, said Mr Albury used Brazilian jiu jitsu to come to the rescue of a man, believed to be a defence force officer in plain clothes, who had a person under arrest.

He said: "I saw an off duty officer walking and holding a man by his belt with one hand and a revolver in the next hand. After a while, the man began to give him a hard time. I thought he might have shot him at one point. I turned around to see if I could help, but Ben jumped out, put the man in a choke hold and put him in his campaign van."

Mr Lowe said Mr Albury's action was a good deed that more citizens should follow to help fight crime in the country.
