Probe by Bannister good for the Bahamas

EDITOR, The Tribune.

FREE National Movement (FNM) candidate for North Andros and the Berry Islands, Desmond Bannister initiated a probe into illegal voter registration in this constituency. Reports indicated that at least 30 voters were being challenged in a court of law.

This has unfortunately caused further division among residents who have shown their passion in support of either the FNM or the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP). It saddens me that politics plays a part in everything we do. Politics continues to divide us and many Bahamians have lost their sense of good judgment.

I am in support of Bahamians who uphold the law and the law emphatically states that you should vote where you live.

Alphonso Smith, a North Andros resident calls the process, "A wonderful display of democracy." I was almost ecstatic when I heard this because it shows that there are still level headed Bahamians out there who want what is best for the Bahamas and who are thinking clearly.

The display of political paraphernalia at the court hearing is shameful. The probe by the residents in my view has nothing to do with the PLP and the FNM. It is about registered Bahamian voters breaking the law.

I join many other Bahamians, including the Prime Minister, who encourages all to vote where you live. Our voter registration process obviously needs to be improved because voters can register with relative ease.

In view of this probe in Andros, I hope that other residents who may know of similar cases join together and file the necessary complaints.

The final results of this voter registration probe in North Andros is incomplete, but we have already netted positive results as it is reported that some registered voters in North Andros and the Berry Islands have already re-registered in the correct constituency.

Let's keep calm heads during this election season because when it boils down, we are all in the same boat.
