FREEPORT - Students at Bishop Michael Eldon High and Primary Schools celebrated with a motorcade on Tuesday after winning the 19th Anglican Schools Festival, held in Grand Bahama.

The BME Warriors are the current defending champs, and this year's win is their ninth championship.

The festival, which is held every two years, brought students from the four Anglican schools in the Bahamas to compete in 12 sporting and academic events.

Students from Bishop Michael Eldon Schools in Grand Bahama; St John's and St Ann's in New Providence; and St Andrews in Exuma competed in various disciplines, including swimming, softball, basketball, cheerleading, Spelling Bee, Speech Elocution, track and field, and soccer, etc.

BMEHS principal Anita Doherty said the school took first place in eight of the 12 events, winning the Fest.

"Our students competed very well and we are proud of their achievements," she said.

On Tuesday, students, parents and teachers celebrated their win on Grand Bahama.

A police escort led a procession of vehicles, decorated with balloons in the school's colours, into the Port Lucaya area. Students, piled on flat bed trucks, chanting, "Warriors are number one!"

Mrs Doherty said the students continue to excel in sports and academics.

She noted that BMES won both junior and senior track events.

She also noted that seventh grade student Suraj Nair represented Grand Bahama in the Spelling Bee, and student Vashti Eve Burrows was selected Junior Minister of Tourism.

The Anglican Central Education Authority said the fest is a means of fellowship for students, staff, and parents of all their schools.

The five-day event was held February 8-12 on Grand Bahama. Formerly known as the "Triangular Meet," the event expanded to include a number of sporting disciplines in track and field, basketball, swimming, soccer, elocution, spelling, choir, band and cheerleading.

The BME Warriors have won most of the championships, while St John's has won six, and St Anne's has won two.
