Miller admits 'stupid' quote - but says it was out of context

THE FNM hit out at Leslie Miller Saturday night, claiming PLP Tall Pines candidate called black Bahamians “stupid”.

But Mr Miller responded last night, saying the comments were taken out of context and challenging Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham to be “a man” and tell the whole story.

At its mass rally at Clifford Park, the FNM released a recording in which, responding to an unheard question, Mr Miller said: “...totally. The stupidity of especially black Bahamians ¬– any time you hear some people of colour say anything, they go nuts.

“You go on the internet, these people go on the internet and find all kinda foolishness, and unscientific, and they feed it to them, and they believe it.”

While it is clearly Mr Miller’s voice, the context of his comments is not apparent from the clip.

The FNM claimed the video is evidence that the PLP’s boast of believing in Bahamians is not true.

But Mr Miller called this an “utter lie” and said the FNM “fixed it up”.

According to the candidate, the conversation concerned LNG, which he agitated for during his time as Minister of Trade and Industry, and which certain environmentalists fought against.

Mr Miller said in the recording, he was lamenting the fact that some Bahamians were stupid enough to listen to informed people at the time.

The candidate said he was deeply insulted by the FNM’s move, as he spend the last 30 years “fighting for Bahamians – probably even more than Hubert Ingraham”.

There is nothing out of context about "the stupidity of especially black Bahamians". No matter what the context, this phrase is quite meaningful standing on its own. Does Mr. Miller think he is less black than the average black Bahamian and thus he's not as stupid as the average black Bahamian. He can convince the grass roots people voting for him that it is out of context but for the more intelligent among us, the statement is very telling - no matter what the context. Just remember, we are not all grass roots, even if we are black - so the "out of context" claim/excuse/explanation doesn't fly. My only wish is that we had heard this much earlier because Mr. Miller, quite frankly, doesn't deserve the votes of black Bahamians - stupid or intelligent.
